چکیده

Transport experiments are sensitive to charged ‘quasiparticle’ excitations of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Inelastic Raman scattering experiments have probed an amazing variety of other excitations: excitons, rotons, bi-rotons, trions, flavor altering excitons, spin waves, spin-flip excitons, and spin-flip rotons. This paper reviews the status of our theoretical understanding of these excitations. q 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. PACS: 71.10.Pm; 73.43.Kf

Matrix Effective Theories of the Fractional Quantum Hall effect

The present understanding of nonperturbative ground states in the fractional quantum Hall effect is based on effective theories of the Jain “composite fermion” excitations. We review the approach based on matrix variables, i.e. D0 branes, originally introduced by Susskind and Polychronakos. We show that the Maxwell-Chern-Simons matrix gauge theory provides a matrix generalization of the quantum...

Conformal field theory approach to bulk wave functions in the fractional quantum Hall effect

We propose to describe bulk wave functions of fractional quantum Hall states in terms of correlators of nonunitary b/c-spin systems. These yield a promising conformal field theory analogon of the composite fermion picture of Jain. Fractional statistics is described by twist fields which naturally appear in the b/c-spin systems. We provide a geometrical interpretation of our approach in which bu...

Fermi - hypernetted - chain study of unprojected wave functions to describe the half - filled state of the fractional quantum Hall effect

The Fermi hypernetted-chain theory is applied to study the half-filled state of the fractional quantum Hall effect in the thermodynamic limit. We study in detail the radial distribution function, the correlation energy, and the quasiparticle-quasihole excitation spectrum of an unprojected Fermi wave function of the form cn51/2 5P j,k N (z j2zk) 2 Det$fkW(r W)%, a possible candidate to describe ...

Effective vector-field theory and long-wavelength universality of the fractional quantum Hall effect

We report on an effective vector-field theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect that takes into account projection to Landau levels. The effective theory refers to neither the compositeboson nor composite-fermion picture, but properly reproduces the results consistent with them, thus revealing the universality of the long-wavelength characteristics of the quantum Hall states. In particular,...
